Two simple questions, that’s it. Actors act  - or to be more exact, a theatre company plays something for people, who (want to) watch, generally speaking, an audience.

It is Peter Brook‘s simple, timeless definition of the theatre. In any case theatre needs players and an audience.  This audience judges the performance in general terms „liked it“, „didn‘t like it“, „just so-so“.  This clear distinction has shifted in the era of postdramatic theatre, the so called fourth wall marking the line between stage and audience is crossed by both sides. The players conquer the auditorium and take on the part of the active spectator, whereas the spectators themselves act on stage as „experts of everyday life“.

In amateur theatre this crossing of lines has always been part of their self-concept. The potential spectators take to the stage, act and are confronted with the taste and criticism of an audience. There are four aspects of motivation: the fun and risk of acting and playing, the hope to win admiration, the active engagement with contents, formats and aesthetics of the theatre and participation in social and cultural processes.

The aspect of culture being something that is merely „consumed“ through the audience by buying a ticket gradually evolves more and more to a form of participation and interaction. Theatre is constantly searching and finding aesthetic ways to deal with communication and to mirror and reflect us and life in general. For amateurs - in the true sense of the term meaning „people with a specific strong passion for something“ -  this is a process of self reflection with all the tools, techniques and methods theatre can provide and to eventually find appropriate ways to express this on stage.

Or in other words, it is an active impulse for education and personal development.

Taking a closer look at these „performing passionates“ we will find the whole scope of our society: from children to elderly people, from local long-time residents to people migrating from other parts of the world or seeking refuge, and also people with their minor or major handicaps. We all are constantly changing between being a performer or part of the audience and thus look at life from various perspectives. Most of the times this implies looking at ourself from many different angles. Amateur theatre reflects society itself, being socio- and intercultural and inclusive.

If we perceive the way we live as a „social sculpture“ (as Joseph Beuys suggests), then everybody becomes an artist. The main and foremost ambition of the festival „Theatertage am See“ is to provide a stage for all those artists of everyday life, to help them to perform as an actor, to observe and to learn as an audience, and to hopefully create an environment in which art and life can meet and can be creatively discussed.

The posts, the boards are up, and here at leisure

The crowd expects a feast in what we'll give.

They're sitting now with eyebrows raised,

Quite calmly there, would gladly be amazed.
